Jessica Wolf’s Art of Breathing Postgraduate Certification for Alexander Technique Teachers

Jessica Wolf’s Art of Breathing® is a 60-hour postgraduate certification program for Alexander Technique teachers.

The Art of Breathing is a distinct and cohesive method for restoring natural breathing rhythms and psychophysical balance. The technique integrates Jessica’s work in respiratory science and education with the principles of F.M. Alexander’s Technique and Carl Stough’s Breathing Coordination.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed specifically for Alexander teachers and provides a structured methodology of principles and hands-on procedures. Graduates of the program enhance their teaching with tools that promote respiratory ease, vocal resilience, and overall wellbeing.

What distinguishes the Art of Breathing is its specific focus on the breath—its quality, flow, rhythm, geography, and motion—supported by hands-on guidance.

Who can apply?

Certified Alexander Technique teachers with a minimum of five years’ teaching experience. Exceptions may be granted at the program leaders’ discretion.

Teachers who are interested in enhancing their skills of exploring internal movement and facilitating awareness, inhibition, and direction.  Breathing is not separate from Use, but intrinsic to it. Breathing is a whole-body experience, connecting emotional life, presence, and physical vitality.

Program Structure

    • 60 hours of training offered in modular sessions

    • We offer modules of 30 hours over a week. Hours can be accumulated over two years.

    • 6 Private lessons are included in the cost of tuition

Nuria Vera

I feel very fortunate that my wish to understand human functioning better has led me to Jessica Wolf and her Art of Breathing. Her work has given me a new kinaesthetic awareness of my breathing system, and it is very comforting to feel the continuous, harmonious movement of my whole torso as air flows in and out.

I completed Jessica’s postgraduate training in 2018. Since then, I have been applying her method in my classes, and I consider free, full breathing essential to helping people improve their well-being.

I want to continue exploring, learning and growing. My passion is helping those who want to do the same.

I had been teaching the Alexander Technique for over 20 years when I discovered Jessica’s work. For me it is the missing piece of the jigsaw. All through our lessons, our training and our teaching as Alexander teachers we talk about breathing, we read about breathing, we study the anatomy of breathing. We learn ‘how to breathe’ and we practice breathing games and ‘exercises’. But, when I finally came across Jessica’s Art of Breathing I realised I had never really understood or practised full, unhindered breathing the way Alexander talked about it and the way breathing is meant to be.
I find this work as exciting as I found the Alexander Technique when I first had lessons in 1983. It is truly life-changing in the most profound way.

My Breathing Story

Colin Beattie

So there I was, having just heard myself say “Wow” as I came to a quiet stop. I was standing on the busy, cobbled street in Galway, looking down at my torso, trying to understand how my ribcage was moving in such a way that it felt both very alien to me and yet at the same time wonderfully free and natural. I could feel my ribs and breath moving in an easy, free-flowing, ongoing rhythm of their own that afterwards reminded me a little of the movement of a jellyfish.

That was 2014, and it was my first experience of the work of Jessica Wolf. I found it incredibly liberating, and I’ve found it increasingly so in the years since as I’ve attended Jessica’s subsequent courses in Europe. In 2017, I completed her 60-hour postgraduate diploma for Alexander Technique teachers, and in 2024 Jessica qualified me to teach it to others.

I’ve been teaching Alexander Technique, specialising in its application to swimming, since 2001. Jessica’s work has been deeply helpful in identifying and letting go of restrictions, not only in the movement of my ribs and the rhythm of my breathing, but also throughout my whole self, unlocking new vitality, freedom, and pleasure in being. I’ve been delighted to see these benefits also being passed on to my students. I’m very much enjoying sharing this work with my students and with many interested and interesting Alexander Teachers; we are all on our own journeys of discovery, and Jessica’s work offers some very helpful tools for finding our way.

I live and work near Belfast, Northern Ireland.
